Like an actor in the wrong role, the manager of the homeless shelter wasn’t working. I was going for someone who looked unkempt, in contrast to their box-ticking bureaucrat persona. He might be homeless himself, or impersonating the manager, which would have been interesting, but didn’t really fit into Fretwell’s story. So the beard had to go and I had to redraw the scene. The first time I’ve hand lettered in a foreign language. This was for Internazionale magazine who asked for a short (two pages) topical story specific to my home country. I had to change some phrasing, such as Punch and Judy for soap opera as it didn’t translate. I also didn’t do the translation, I struggle enough with english.
